(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Preparations are underway to stage the World School Handball Championship in Qatar from February 21 to 28.
Organised by the Qatar School Sports Association (QSSF) under the patronage of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), the 24th edition of the championship will be held across three venues Ali bin Hamad Al-Attiyah Hall at Al Sadd Club, Aspire Dome and Women's Sports Hall in Aspire.
Hosts Qatar has only fielded boys' team in the championship, and they are drawn in Group A along with Denmark, Austria, Poland and Morocco. Qatar will play their first match against Morocco on February 22 at 1pm.
QSSF Executive Director and tournament director Abdulrahman al-Muftah said the organising committee is maximising its efforts to stage the tournament successfully.
'We are following the International School Sports Federation's instructions very carefully and organising the event to high standards. Danclans Stolluz, Vice President of the ISSF and Tom Christian, Chairman of the Technical Committee of the ISSF have carried an inspection of the venues and are happy with organisation, he said.
'The quality of the tournament will be very high. Around 29 countries will be taking part in the event. Some of the players have played in major international tournaments like junior handball World Cup, al-Muftah said.
Dr Salah Salem, technical expert of the QSSF and deputy director of the tournament said that the countdown to the start of the World Cup school has started, and with it preparations are going on very smoothly.
'Qatar has very successfully organised the World Handball Championship before. And ISF are very optimistic with Qatar's handling of the event. The opening ceremony will be held on February 21st and all the arrangements are in place, Dr Salah Salem said.
