(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Feb. 11 (Petra) -- Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced its need for USD1.06 billion to save lives of people, and combat poverty and harsh life conditions that are rampant in over 26 countries, according to a statement a copy of which was obtained by Petra.
After a decline in the numbers of people suffering from poverty, the numbers rose again due to conflicts and climate shocks.
FAO seeks to reach more than 30 million people who depend on agriculture as their main livelihood through interventions that aim to reinvigorate the local production of food and enhance its quality.
Interventions include providing seeds, tools, and whatever is necessary for harvest, protecting livestock through veterinary services, giving people training courses in better food production, and in managing land and water, and giving cash assistance to the people in need so they can get food immediately.
The main reason behind the increase in humanitarian needs is the ongoing violence and conflict, in addition to climate shocks that often exacerbate and intensify the violence, FAO explained.
Director of Emergency and Rehabilitation at FAO, Dominique Burgeon, said that it is necessary to keep on the production of food and reconstruct agriculture to prevent the loss in life to poverty, to provide a means to withstand amid this humanitarian crisis, and so that local communities can reconstruct faster after a year has passed since the beginning of the crisis.
FAO's humanitarian call in 2018 focuses on the helping the vulnerable whom suffer from crises in 26 countries that are known to be the most affected from food insecurity, including Yemen, which has the biggest population to suffer from acute food insecurity. FAO seeks to reach 5. 7 million people.
