UAE- DFWAC discuss combating human trafficking with officials in Thailand

BANGKOK, 11th February, 2018 (WAM) -- Afra Al Basti, Director-General of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, DFWAC, and Member of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, has visited the Bali Process Regional Office in Thailand to discuss possible cooperation and exchange of expertise in the field of combating human trafficking and international smuggling, and to aid and assist the victims of this crime.

This came during the participation of Al Basti as part of a UAE delegation to Thailand to sign a memorandum of understanding, MoU, on cooperation in combating human trafficking in the framework of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking to implement its national strategy and enhance international cooperation.

The UAE delegation was headed by Ahmed Al Jarman, Assistant Minister for Human Rights and International Law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, MoFAIC, and Vice Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.

Al Basti noted that the UAE's continuous efforts to combat human trafficking, including the signing of this agreement, reflects the great interest that the UAE Government attaches to this issue.

She added that the countries of the world could not individually eliminate the crime of human trafficking as it is an organised crime in most cases and is implemented via more than one state - including countries of origin, transit, and destination where victims are trafficked. This requires concerted efforts and coordination between all countries to combat this crime, Al Basti continued.

Under the MoU, the concerned entities of both the UAE and Thailand will work closely to expose and investigate transnational trafficking in persons, especially in women and children, in countries of origin, transit and destination, as well as cooperation and assistance in joint legal proceedings.
