(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The republic of France is in the process of a "major transformation", the French Prime Minister Edouard Philipe, has said at the World Government Summit.
Phillipe made the statement during his keynote speech at the summit in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
He said the appointment of the republic's youngest ever president, Emmanuel Macron, was the beginning of the transformation.
"France made a choice - decided to leave the older generation that did so much for the country. France chose the youngest president of the republic ever. During his campaign, Macron had announced his vision of the transformation of the country and we are going through a great transformation," Philipe said. "Our vision is to prepare for the future by betting that we have what it takes. If we want to do great things, face all the great challenges, we have to transform our education and ensure ongoing training for all the French people."
He also touched on how France tends to "improve" itself, including taking steps on reducing its debt and spending more on its defence.
He said there are "many dangers" in the world and France "should protect itself like any other country would".
"These are the measures we are undertaking. France, in the next five years, will spend more on its defence than in the years before," he said. "We are taking key measures in areas like education, security and environment, to keep up with the specificities of the European market. "It is our responsibility to transform the world, we cannot be content with the way the world is going, and we need to have a better world."
