UN calls for stronger efforts to stop pandemic diseases

(MENAFN) UN disaster risk agency's chief has advised to put faster efforts into avoiding dangerous infectious disease epidemics that has the capabilities of causing countless deaths.

Due to the pandemics' threat being "out of sight, out of mind", there is a worldwide short use of vaccine technologies and disease examination, as noted by Head of the United Nations' Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Robert Glasser.

The chief reportedly explained "we've had the emergence of new viruses and viruses are mutating all the time, like avian influenza, SARS ... people are not generally aware of them because they are hazards that don't strike very often."

"But when they do strike, they can be enormously devastating," he warned, adding "in this area, there is so much work to do."
