Shaheen Shah Afridi: Pakistan Cricket star in the making


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) LANDI KOTAL: Khyber Agency has contributed the best players to national cricket team who represented the country on national and international levels.

They include Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Usman Shinwari, Riaz Afridi and now Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Younger brother of former cricketer Riaz Afridi, Shaheen is attracted the attention of selectors and former players including former captain Pakistan Cricket Team Wasim Akram.

Wasim Akram has once commented that Shaheen was talented enough to fill the gap that was created after he bade adieu to international cricket.

Shaheen represented Pakistan in the recently held Under-19 Cricket World Cup and secured 12 wickets in just five matches.

Shaheen had bowled at a speed of 144 kilometer/hour in the world cup and was the secured the second fastest bowler's record.

His outstanding performance attracted the attentions of international players and left the International Cricket Council with no option but to make him part of its Under-19 team.

In his interview to Tribal News Network, he said he started playing cricket from his childhood. 'I would play at Tatara Cricket Ground in Landi Kotal and would bowl with tennis ball,' he said.

He got admission at a cricket academy in Peshawar and would take part in tour tournament and won many awards for his excellent performance.

'I become part of Fata under-19 team and performed well after which I was selected for Pakistan's tour to Australia,' he said.

It was because of his good performance that he was made part of Under-19 team for Asia Cup where was appreciated for his excellent bowling.

Regarding Pakistan's defeat in the world cup, he said they lost because of crowed pressure as Indian crowed supported its team.

He also toured Australia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and New Zealand and would leave for Dubai play Pakistan Super League on March 15. He would be part of Lahore Qalandars team.

He is the student of F.Sc, part first, and want to complete his education too. 'There is shortage of facilities and opportunities not talent in tribal areas,' he complained, and said that if given chance players from Fata in every games could represent the country.
