A Filipino woman, her husband and another unidentified man were killed after an alleged stalker set the couple's house on fire in the Kazama district of Nagano Prefecture in Japan.

Flora Cabornay Kitamura, 41, was taken to hospital in a critical condition with burns covering most of her body following Sunday's blaze, and died on Tuesday. The body of her husband Shoichi, 57, was found in the blackened building, along with that of a second male.

Shoichi's 85-year-old mother, who was not named, also suffered a slight burn to her respiratory tract in the fire. Her condition is satisfactory.

The fire broke out at 10am on Sunday, shortly after Fora had called the police to report that a man was breaking into their house and they were 'having some trouble'. He is believed to have attacked the occupants.

Police confirmed that Flora had complained in December that the man, a Filipino who lives in Yamanashi Prefecture, southeast of Nagano, was stalking her; they had warned him to stay away.

A coroner's inquiry will be held to determine the cause of the deaths.
