In Khost province, drive launched against high dowry rates

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The Khost Welfare and Social Foundation (KWSF) has launched a campaign in the southeastern province against high dowry rates and extravagant expenses on wedding ceremonies.
Akhtar Gul Wafa, head of the foundation, told Pajhwok Afghan News youth had been faced with multiple problems due to high bride prices and lavish expenditure on wedding ceremonies.
Most of the time, youth are forced to go to foreign countries for work to earn the required money. He said the KWSF had embarked on a drive to help youngsters meet their wedding expenditures and work against high dowry rates.
In a first, the foundation purchased appliances for a bride. €œThe bride€™s father died in her childhood. The groom was not financially sound either. We, therefore, purchased her items worth 150,000 rupees.€
Hanefa, the bride€™s mother, said she married her daughter off to a nephew working in the city. The groom was unable to arrange the dowry or buy household appliances.
€œWe approached the KWSF, which bought the required households items for my daughter. We will arrange her wedding ceremony simply because we don€™t have enough financial resources,€ she promised.
Civil society activist Sultan Mahmood Khairkhwa told Pajhwok some tribal elders had decided to reduce the dowry amount but the decision was not implemented.
He asked religious scholars to spread awareness among the masses regarding the problems caused by high dowry in the countryside.
