10 easy tips to lower your carbon footprint in UAE

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) February 4 marks the National Environment Day that coincides with the "Car Free Day" in the UAE. Hand in hand, both the title days are reflective of our everyday consumer activities and so we should not shy away from getting involved and trying to make a difference.

Habits can tend to make us lazy to change, yet these changes don't have to be dramatically large to make a difference on an environmental level.

Below is the list of some daily or weekly activities that can be exchanged for a more eco-friendly approach.

1 - Wash your clothes on a cold wash and in large batches instead of small. This helps you save on energy.

2 - Use a refillable bottle to fill up your water to save on plastic consumption.

3 - Take your own reusable bags to the supermarket and don't collect your fruits/vegetables in separate plastic bags as a measure to promote sustainability.

4 - It is more expensive to recycle plastic than it is to make it in the UAE. This is why not every type of plastic can be recycled and reused. One plastic that can be recycled is the plastic bottles. You can consult a company that actually delivers and reutilizes your water and reprocesses the plastic bottles for free.

5 - Instead of buying new clothes why not consider a 'clothes swap' with your friends if they are of similar size. This is also a great thing to do for with children's clothes especially as they are always growing or growing up.

6 - Turn the tap off whilst cleaning your teeth, you'll be surprised at how much water you save.

7 - Turn the lights off during the day and only use them at night in your house. This would not only help you save electricity but also save money on smaller electricity bills.

8 - Turn off Wi-Fi at the mains when not in use or set an allocated time just for Wi-Fi. This will assist in the reduction of unnecessary energy output.

9 - Walk, cycle, roller stake to your destination if possible, or use public transport. This will reduce the number of vehicles on the road and decrease the pollution in the environment.

10 - Take time to plan your grocery list. Buy only what you really need for that week to reduce waste.
