Tamil font code creator dead aged 42


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Gopikrishnan, alias Thagadoor Gopi, the man who created a universal code or Unicode so that English could be transliterated to Tamil and other Indian language fonts, died of cardiac arrest in Hyderabad last week.
He was 42 and is survived by wife and two children.
Gopikrishnan was born in Dharmapuri, about 300km from Chennai to parents who were in government service.
He qualified as a software engineer and took to coding in 2004. His Unicode uploaded on his website HiGopi.com was available free to all mobile and computer users. The character of each word was designed and coded by Gopi and his assistant Surada Yarlavaanan for Tamil, Bengali, Telugu,Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Punjabi and Oriya.
He was employed in Hyderabad but also worked abroad on deputations for coding.

Girl injured asman falls on herfrom balcony
A four-year-old girl was critically injured when a man in drunken stupor fell over her from his balcony in the slum area of Thoraipakkam in Chennai last week.
The accident happened as Dhanyasri was walking with her grandfather.
The man who fell on her suffered only a mild fracture.
In another incident, a 32-year-old engineer died after falling from a flyover at the Chennai airport. He was identified as Chaitanya Vyuru from Vijayawada working in Bengaluru. Police suspect he was on a drug overdose.
In a third incident, a school boy died when a gas cylinder brought in to fill helium balloons at a school sports day exploded in Vellore. Jeethush, 17, died while his friend Naveen was critically injured.

Madurai mantops in NEETPG exam
R Madhan, a doctor from Government Madurai Medical College, scored the highest marks in Tamil Nadu getting 925/1,200 in the January 8 National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET-PG), an admission exam for postgraduate medical studies, last week.
The second and third ranks were secured by Chirag Mandal from Christian College Vellore and P Christy from Madras Medical College.
The date for single window counselling to allot colleges will be announced soon.
Many states had opposed the NEET exams over tough syllabus and language barriers. The federal government gave in by scaling it down to Central Board of Certificate Education (CBSE) syllabus. NEET is conducted twice a year. The next exam is on May 6.

Shops destroyedin fire at temple
A fire which broke out at the 14th century Sri Meenaksh Sundareshwar temple in Madurai damaged around 30 shops in the complex last week.
It took four fire tenders about an hour to control the blaze which police suspect was caused by an electrical short circuit. There were no reports of deaths or injuries as the incident occurred at night.
Meenakshi temple in the heart of Madurai has four carved gateways and is built in co-centric squares containing shops, museums and prayer halls, ponds and sanctum sanctorum. It is a major tourist attraction besides being a holy Hindu destination attracting about 100,000 visitors every day.
The temple is surrounded by traditional markets and commercial business establishments.
