(MENAFN) Researchers using a high-tech mid-air mapping technique have discovered tens of thousands of formerly undetected Mayan houses, buildings, defense works and pyramids in dense jungle in Guatemala.
The discovery indicates the possibility of millions more people lived at the Peten region site than initially believed.
A professor of Anthropology at Tulane University said: "That is two to three times more inhabitants than people were saying there were."
A Research Assistant Professor at Tulane University said: "Their agriculture is much more intensive and therefore sustainable than we thought and they were cultivating every inch of the land."
