Doha: The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was among the audience at the evening show of the play "Shally Yseer" (roughly translates to What is Happening) on Thursday at the Qatar National Theater. At the end of the show, the Emir went up to the stage and congratulated the cast, amid loud applause from the audience.
The Qatari play, a comic take on the blockade against Qatar, has received an unprecedented public response in the country, especially among the Qatari citizens. The theatre that has been performing for 30 last days continues to be sold out on most days.
The culture ministry on their social media page tweeted that the Emir's presence affirms the State' support for theatre and all forms of art.
The play presents a humorous take on things happening during the siege from the four countries (Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt), beginning from the hacking of Qatar News Agency to the subsequent actions related to the diplomatic blockade.
The play also touched upon the repercussions of the blockade including the breaking up of families and punishing those sympathising with Qatar on social media and so on. The play concludes with a song "Allah ya Omri Qatar" that forms a perfect end leaving the audience enthused about their country.
According to the lead actor and director Ghanim Al-Sulaiti, the band celebrated the occasion of the passage of 30 continuous performances of the play, stressing that this has not happened in the history of the Qatari theater, since 1998, during the performance of the play "Amjad Ya Arab."
Qatari Culture and Sports Minister HE Salah bin Ghanim Al-Ali described the play as "the return of the Qatari theater to its brilliance and its attachment to the issues of society."
"This wonderful play reflects the level of content and dramatic construction that characterizes it, addresses the just cause of Qatari society and represents a new roadmap for the theater in Qatar, which is radiant in the Arab world," he said in tweet shared on the Ministry of Culture's Twitter account.
