Oman- Gulf Cup heroes honoured


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The national football heroes, who brought home the Gulf Cup glory for the second time last month, were felicitated by the Ministry of Sports Affairs at a grand reception held at the Hotel InterContinental Muscat gardens on Tuesday night.

Cash awards, gifts, cars and plots of land, which were announced earlier, were showered on the Red Warriors and the coaching and technical staff by the sports ministry, Diwan of Royal Court and private sector companies.

H H Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, was the chief guest and honoured the players and the officials in the presence of H E Sheikh Saad al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs, H E Rashad al Hinai, Undersecretary at the sports ministry, ministers, and chairmen of different sports associations and committees

Oman had defeated UAE 5-4 in a penalty shootout in the final of the 23rd Gulf Cup in Kuwait City on January 5 to claim its second title, nine years after it won its maiden crown in Muscat.

H E Sheikh al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs, said, "The achievement of the national football team is one of the biggest in the sports history of Oman. The team's performance was praised by one and all and we are proud of them.'

Sheikh Salim al Wahaibi, the Oman Football Association (OFA) chairman also hailed the national team's achievement and said that the OFA is committed to lead Oman football to greater heights in the future.
