Jordan, donors endorse new Syrian refugee response plan

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Feb. 1 (Petra)-The government and the international community on Thursday endorsed a $7.3-billion three-year Jordan Response Platform (JRP) for the Syria Crisis.

The JRP for the Syria Crisis 2018–2020, an outcome of relevant intensive local and int'l effort, is a call for further collective action to respond to this humanitarian plight.

The platform was approved during a two-hour meeting attended by Prime Minister, Hani Mulki, ministers, ambassadors, diplomats, alongside high-level officials and civil society representatives.

The gov't will take this three-year response plan as a reference document to identify its needs to axe impact of the diverse repercussions of the Syrian refugees' issue, to back hosting communities, and to support state budget.

The Jordanian embassies abroad will also refer to this key plan in tabling support bills.

The premier told the gathering the situation in Syria and the refugee crisis are internationally recognized as " the worst humanitarian disaster facing the world since World War 2" and pose a threat to world peace, development, and economic growth.

The chance for 4 million Syrian displaced persons worldwide to return is out-of-reach seven years after the crisis broke out, Al-Mulki pointed out.

Even if a peaceful settlement is reached, the Syria reconstruction process will take several years to pave way for the return of refugees. Thus, Jordan will continue to burden the additionally increasing cost and will need to tackle rigorous challenges socially and economically, he pointed out.

Al-Mulki said Jordan is committed to uphold its humanitarian obligations towards Syrian refugees, even though it carries "more than its fair share of the response".

The premier also stressed the dire need to continue supporting Jordan in a bid to provide basic services to Syrians.

"It is a crisis whose magnitude continuously demands a collective response equal to the scale of the challenge," the premier added.

Al-Mulki expressed hope the response plan will be a successful mechanism for planning and execution based on the cooperation of donors and the int'l community.
