Oman- Cancer cases on the rise to double by 2025: OCA
Breast cancer, colorectal cancer, thyroid and lung cancer are among some types that are fast increasing. 'Breast cancer is the most common form seen in Oman, but colorectal cancer, thyroid and lung cancer cases are also on the rise,' Dr Kharusi said. To create more awareness, Dr Kharusi said OCA will hold several activities on Sunday to mark World Cancer Day founded by the Union International for Cancer Control (UICC).
He said awareness is the best way to tackle in the initial stages of cancer. 'Early diagnosis is the key to survive and all types of cancer should be diagnosed in stage 1 itself in order to be successfully treated.'A number of events will be held by OCA to mark World Cancer Day. 'UICC is endorsing this day to create awareness about cancer and its burden,' he said. In association with Oman Avenues Mall, OCA will have an awareness event from 10am to 10pm on Sunday.
The mobile mammography unit will also offer free mammograms to women above 40 years. In addition, a free medical check-up and a breast examination for women will also be held.'OCA is also planning to light one of the country's landmark monument to mark the occasion. Royal Opera House Muscat is an option,' said Dr Kharusi. On February 12, OCA will hold a 'Hug a Bear' party for children suffering from cancer at The Royal Hospital at 11am in the oncology department. There would also be a party for children of Dar al Hanan at 4.30pm, added Dr Kharusi.
