Putin hails Sochi conf. as significant step towards peace in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Jan 30 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that the ongoing Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian resort city of Sochi is a significant step towards peace in Syria.

Putin said in a speech read out by Russian Foreign Minister Sergev Lavrov that this gathering aims at bringing Syrians closer after seven years of the armed conflict that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and produced millions of refugees.

He described the congress as a good opportunity for the conferees to fulfill the expectations and hopes of the Syrian people to stop war and eliminate terrorism and to bring their country back to normal.

He emphasized that effective dialogue should be held between all Syrian factions under UN sponsorship in order to find an all-out political settlement to the Syrian conflict in line with relevant international resolutions.

The Russian leader spoke highly of the big role played by Iran, Turkey and the UN in the holding of the Sochi conference.

Over 1,300 representatives from Syrian factions, groups, trade unions and clans, together with independent figures, are participating in the meeting.

The aim of the meeting is to lay the foundation for a peaceful future for the war-torn country; the delegates are expected to begin work on a new constitution and discuss reconciliation in Syria. (end) as.mt
