Sochi talks support Syrian territorial unity, sovereignty
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Jan 30 (KUNA) -- A Russian-organised peace conference on Syria urged the need to respect the independence, security and territorial integrity of the war-torn Arab country and for the Syrians alone to decide their country's fate.
In a final communique, the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue, held in the city of Sochi, underlined full commitment to the national sovereignty of Syria and its right to ensure that others do not interfere in its affairs.
The Syrian people alone should decide the fate of their country through democratic means and have the exclusive rights to choose their political, economic and social systems, without foreign pressure or intervention, it said.
The document declared that Syria has a democratic political system, which is non-sectarian and is based on political pluralism and equal rights, regardless of faith, race or gender. It is governed by the rule of law, which ensures the full equality of all citizens and has an independent judiciary.
It called on the country to build a strong and united armed forces, able to fulfil its responsibilities in accordance with the constitution, while expressing utter rejection of terrorism and support for human rights and liberties.
The conference also backed the agreement reached at the two former UN-hosted conferences on the matter to form a constitutional committee composed of the Syrian government and the opposition with the purpose of drafting a constitutional reform leading to a political settlement.
In spite of hosting over 1,500 attendees, including Iran and the United Nations special envoy Staffan di Mistura, the Syrian opposition refused to attend the talks, which witnessed Turkey filling in on its behalf. (pickup previous) as.sd
