Ancient temple destroyed by Turkey's assaults on Afrin

(MENAFN) An ancient temple located in Syria's Kurdish-held Afrin region has been destroyed by Turkey's assaults, the Syrian government and monitoring groups say.

Where there used to be basalt lions is now what looks like a crater in the center of the Ain Dara site and rubble, pictures circulated online showed.

In the first millennium BC, Arameans have built the Neo-Hittite temple.

An offensive to push a Kurdish militia out of Afrin nine days ago have been launched by Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels.

The seven years old civil war has destroyed many of Syria's ancient and beautiful sites, many of which were demolished by IS for being "idolatrous".
