Iran's administration has approved a project to manufacture paper from calcium carbonate.
Industrial Development & Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO), a major government-owned conglomerate will invest in the project, which will have a capacity to produce 20,000 tons of paper per year, IDRO said.
The project will be implemented in Kharameh county, located in southern Iranian province of Fars.
The project is aimed to protect environment and saving trees as well as creating jobs in less developed areas of the country.
The raw materials, which will be used for paper manufacturing plant are available across the country, according to the report.
There are four popular minerals used in paper filling and coating including kaolin clay, calcium carbonate (available as ground or precipitated), titanium dioxide and talc.
According to a study published in 2015 in the journal Nature 15.3 billion trees are cut down each year.
A 2011 study also suggests that nearly 4 billion trees worldwide are cut down each year for paper, representing about 35 percent of all harvested trees.
