Officials underscore Kuwait's cultural role


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Jan 27 (KUNA) -- Two Kuwaiti officials on Saturday stressed the significant role of Kuwaiti cultural institutions in the creation of Gulf and Arab intellectual thought.

The Kuwaiti Information Ministry's officials made the remarks to KUNA following the opening of the 49th Cairo International book Fair.

Onoud Al-Said, an official at the ministry's foreign media sector, said the State of Kuwait boasts of great cultural weight, and is home to the most ancient cultural institutions in the Gulf Region.

She pointed out that these cultural agencies had greatly contributed to the promotion of intellectual and cultural opening-up nationwide.

She spoke highly of the distinguished and comprehensive role of the Cairo International Book Fair in the development of Arab thought involving literary, art and political areas.

In this context, the Kuwaiti official reiterated her country's eagerness to partake in various international activities, primarily the book fair.

On his part, Basel Al-Shemeri, the head of the Information Ministry's exhibition department, said the Kuwaiti pavilion at the fair showcases the publications and photos of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah marking the 12th anniversary of ascension to power.

The pavilion also includes publications pertinent to Kuwait's history, tradition and accomplishments in all domains, together with key Kuwaiti writers' publications, he added.

He underlined the important role of Kuwaiti cultural institutions in mirroring Kuwait's honorable cultural and intellectual image.

The 49th Cairo International Book Fair kick-started in Cairo earlier on Friday, attracting exhibitors from 27 Arab and foreign countries. (end) ms.mt
