French FM: Vienna talks last hope for Syrian political settlement

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Jan 24 (KUNA) -- As a critical round of Vienna-based peace negotiations on Syria begins this Thursday, under UN auspices, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told parliamentary question time here that this process is the "last hope" to get a political settlement to this bloody conflict.

Close to 400,000 people have perished in the almost seven years of bitter fighting, while parallel peace processes in Astana, Kazakhstan and in Geneva, under the UN, have failed to come up with a blueprint to satisfy all protagonists.

Le Drian said that the presence of "all belligerents" held out a chance, but a final one to get an agreement.

"Today, there is no prospect of a political solution being present other than - and it's the last hope - the meeting being held tomorrow in Vienna under United Nations auspices, where all belligerents will be present and where he hope an agenda for peace will be drawn up," Le Drian stated.
