(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met in Brussels Monday with Dr. Nasr Al-Hariri, the general coordinator and head of the negotiating team of the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC), reconfirming support to UN-sponsored mediation.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Mogherini confirmed to the SNC the European Union's full and continued support to the UN-led mediation process, that the EU considers as the primary process to achieve an intra-Syrian political solution.
Both recognized the need to urgently and rapidly advance towards a negotiated political transition in Syria, mediated by the UN in Geneva and based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.
Mogherini also confirmed that the EU will be ready to assist in the reconstruction of Syria when a comprehensive, genuine and inclusive political transition, negotiated by the Syrian parties in the conflict on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva Communique, is firmly on its way.
On his part, speaking separately to Arab journalists, Al Hariri said there can be no start to the reconstruction of Syria before "the real and political solution is achieved and which will be accepted by the Syrian people." He noted that Geneva is the only place to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis under the UN auspices.
Any solution to the Syrian crisis must include a political transition and supported by the international community, he added. (end) nk.bs
