Kuwait- EU official raises alarm overspread of fake news


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- Mariya GABRIEL, EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, expressed alarm Monday over the danger to societies by the spread of fake news "Fake news is spreading at a worrying rate, it threatens the reputation of the media and the well-being of our democracies," she told a press conference to inform on the work of the high-level group that has been created by the EU to deal with this issue.

She appealed to all stake holders to draw up approaches to controlling and limiting the circulation of fake news and ensure the credibility of information.

"The high level group on fake news has one key goal and that is to provide the European Commission with options and basis for reflections on all the issues relating to the dissemination of fake news in the traditional and social media and on how to tackle the challenge they represents in social and political term," she added.

On her part, Professor Dr. Madeleine de Cock Buning, Chair of the High-Level Expert Group on Fake News, told the joint press conference that "we are put in front of a wicked problem with potentially a lot of disrupting effects for European societies".

"We have to face this wicked problem in front of society that is sometimes diverse but the good thing is that we have an excellent high-level group," she added. (end) nk.mt
