Doha: Advanced methods of prevention, management and treatment of vascular diseases were discussed at a regional conference held in Doha yesterday.

The 11th Gulf Vascular Society Conference was held in partnership with the 14th Gulf Heart Association Conference and brought together many local and international experts, at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel.

It was chaired by Dr Hasan Al Thani, Head of Trauma and Vascular Surgery Section at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).

The one-day event focused on topics from the fields of vascular surgery, interventional radiology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery and clinical pharmacy. The conference also called to start a Gulf registry to record the prevalence of artery diseases in the region.

'The conference is aimed at sharing the latest advances in vascular medicine, and specifically, recent developments in this field in Qatar. This year's event featured sessions on thetraumatic aortic injury, the newest non-thermal vein ablation technique, and cost analysis for amputation in Qatar. It also offered an opportunity for cardiology specialists and surgeons from GCC countries to discuss opportunities for future collaborations and specifically, the importance of establishing a peripheral artery disease registry in the GCC, said Dr Al Thani.

International and regional speakers at the conference included from Kuwait, Oman, Turkey, the United States and Serbia. Problems of the vascular system are common and can be serious, therefore it is essential to manage the conditions and avoid complications, said Dr Ayman Ahmed El Menyar, Consultant Clinical Research, HMC.

'We exchanged expertise and discussed advanced treatment methods followed in the Gulf, Europe and the United States. Problems affecting the vascular system and blood flow can lead to serious complications like amputation of limbs. So discussions also focused on how to manage the condition of a patient and avoid complications, he told The Peninsula speaking on the sidelines of the conference.

Among common problems related to the vascular system, arteries can become thick and hard, a problem called atherosclerosis. Blood clots can clog vessels and block blood flow to the heart or brain. Weakened blood vessels can burst, causing hemorrhage inside the body.

'We discussed many treatment aspect s, including a new technology used to treat blocks in the blood vessels of the neck. It is important as these vessels supply blood to the head. We also discussed some new techniques employed treating the blockage in the arteries taking blood to the heart, said Dr El Menyar.

He also said that the conference has called to start a Gulf registry to find the prevalence of artery diseases. Two years ago, Qatar started a similar registry and it aims at finding the frequency and risk factors of artery diseases, within the country.
