Moderate quake jolts W. Iran

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TEHRAN, Jan 12 (KUNA) -- A 4.4-magnitude quake rocked Sumar District, Qasr-e Shirin County, Kermanshah Province, west Iran, near the borders with Iraq, on Friday evening.

The tremor, an apparent aftershock of yesterday's quake that injured 13 people, occurred at 9:20 p.m. (local time).

The epicenter of the quake was registered at 45.67 degrees longitude and 33.63 degrees latitude at the depth of nine kilometers, IRNA reported, citing a statement by the Seismological Center affiliated to the Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University.

Kermanshah province has been hit by several earthquakes since November 12, 2017 when a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the province's Ezgeleh region killing at least 620 people and injuring over 12,000 others.

Iran sits on several major seismological fault lines, making it one of the world's most quake-prone countries. (pickup previous) fz.gb
