Turkey nabs 196 migrants

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Jan 12 (KUNA) -- Turkish authorities Friday arrested 196 illegal migrants in two separate operations in the Turkish cities of Izmir and Hatay.

Some 160 Syrians were held in the Aegean Izmir province as they tried to cross into Greece via an illegal route, security officials were quoted by Anadolu news agency as saying.

The arrests were carried out in Cesme and Dikili districts in Azmir, the officials said, adding that all of them were transferred to the migration management agency.

In another security operation, 36 Syrian migrants were caught in Turkey's southeastern province of Hatay, which is close to the Turkish-Syrian border, the officials said.

Turkey has been launching security operations on the border and in the Aegean Sea to arrest illegal migrants while trying to cross into Greek islands, where they travel on to Europe. (end) rs.mt
