Senior advocate Indu Malhotra has made history.

With the Supreme Court collegium recommending her name on Thursday, she will soon become India's first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as the apex court's judge.

Uttarakhand high court chief justice KM Joseph, who quashed the president's rule in the state in 2016, has also been elevated to the top court.

Why is Indu Malhotra's appointment important?
Significance

It's a first for an Indian woman lawyer to become an SC judge without serving in high court.

Currently, justice R Banumathi is the apex court's only woman judge.

The SC has had only six women judges before Malhotra. The first was justice M Fathima Beevi, appointed in 1989, eventually followed by Justices Sujata Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra and Ranjana Prakash Desai.
