MOCHA, 9th January, 2018 (WAM) -- The Arab Coalition Forces, led by Saudi Arabia, have liberated the West Coast of Yemen, and Yemeni children have started smiling again.
The Emirates News Agency, WAM, is reporting the events live from the scene in the country's liberated areas, by visiting some of the critical facilities rebuilt by the UAE, represented by the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, to provide comprehensive services to the Yemeni people.
After a period of darkness caused by the Houthi siege, the Mocha Steam Power Plant reopened following the liberation of Mocha and began its round the clock operations to supply electricity to the city.
Naji Jaafar Qasim, Deputy Director of the Mocha Steam Power Plant, said that the plant was built over 30 years ago and stopped operating in 2015 after the Iranian-backed Houthis militias entered the city.
Qasim added that after the city's liberation by the coalition, supported by the UAE Armed Forces, the station was restored by the ERC while noting that it has an overall capacity of 160-megawatts, produced by four separate 40-megawatt units.
He went on to explain that the station has four desalination units that produce distilled water, which is directed to the units to remove salts and then to the boiler to turn into vapour, allowing the generator to produce electricity. Qasim stressed that they had improved the station's design to provide water free of minerals while it is running round the clock to generate electricity.
The station is not working at full capacity, as some power lines and towers linked to other plants in other regions are not yet operational, he added, expressing his hope that all the areas of Yemen would be liberated soon.
During the period of control of the Houthi militias, the station was neglected and looted of its equipment. The ERC immediately intervened following the liberation of the country's west coast and promptly restored the station and the city's power infrastructure.
Through the ERC, the UAE boosted its philanthropic giving in Yemen in 2017, by contributing to the development of six key sectors damaged by the Houthi militias. These segments include infrastructure, education, health, security, aid relief and housing.
The year 2017 also saw the provision of urgent assistance to the energy sector, which included providing an additional 100 megawatts to the power grid, worth US$50 million, or AED183.5 million, as well as the launch of Mocha Steam Power Plant after its restoration, an upgrade to the Al Rayyan Electricity Line in Eastern Mukalla, and the provision of an additional 10 megawatt capacity to the electricity station in the Lahij Governorate.
