ABU DHABI, 7th January, 2018 (WAM) -- The Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the Umsiyat programme, a series of outdoor music concerts at Umm Al Emarat Park, which will bring an illustrious mix of artists, genres and nationalities as it celebrates music.
Held under the patronage of Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, the Emirates Red Crescent President's Assistant for Women's Affairs, Umsiyat promotes a variety of local, regional and international traditional and modern music in the capital. As part of DCT Abu Dhabi's efforts to raise awareness about the different genres of music from across the globe while safeguarding local musical heritage, the programme will highlight the importance of this musical genre in our common heritage.
The three-night concert series starts with leading Iraqi Maqam singer Farida Mohammad Ali on 8th January 2018. The two-hour performance will comprise of a variety of works by the great Arab poets, Al-Mutanabbi, Baha' al-din Zuhair and Elia Abu Madi, as well as Iraqi poets such as Jabbori Al-Najjar and Abd Al-Karim Al-Allaf. Amongst the Maqam, Farida will also be singing a selection of hits by Iraqi female singers of the 1940s and 1950s including Sadiqah Al-Malaya, Salima Murad and Zohoor Hussain.
Farida will also be performing renowned songs from the legendary Arab singer Nazem Al-Ghazali, and traditional songs of Basra. The programme's modern musical section is composed by Mu?ammad ?usayn Kumar, accompanied by traditional Iraqi instruments.
The second night will see Javed Ali, one of India's best singers, perform poetry and Bollywood songs on 9th January. With his new show, Javed Ali transcends boundaries presenting the core idea of love, longing and union. With a selection of compositions from traditional repertoire and songs based in Bollywood, Javed Ali will enchant the public with a unique concert involving both tradition and popular modernity. Javed Ali sings in various languages including Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Assamese.
The third and final concert will see Tunisian oud player and singer Lofti Bouchnak performing live along with 16 musicians on 10th January. Lofti will bring in the grand finale of Umsiyat with traditional Tunisian songs, accompanied by an international cross-cultural band of musicians from North Africa and Europe. Considered one of the best tenors in the Arab World, Lofti is known as Tunisia's "Pavarotti" and has been involved in a wide range of musical productions ranging from the songs of Umm Kulthoum and chants, to contemporary popular songs.
The three performances will take place daily at the Umm Al Emarat Park from 8pm.
