Arabs ponder alternative to Washington as mediator

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, Jan 6 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abulgheit said on Saturday that the Arab foreign ministers discussed at today's meeting in the Jordanian capital prospects of finding an alternative to the United States of America as mediator in the Middle East peace process.

The issue of finding a substitute for the American mediator in the peace process was raised during the meeting, he said, indicating that the Palestinian delegation stated that Washington practically abandoned its role in the process.

He was speaking at a news conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi following meeting of the six-member commission charged with following up on repercussions of the US president decision to recognize Jerusalem as "Israel's capital." The panel was formed during an extraordinary Arab ministerial meeting, held on December 9.

Trump has recently recognized Jerusalem as "Israel's capital" and affirmed his desire to transfer the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

"The available option is adherence to the peace process and discussing role of the United States and the other stakeholders," the Arab League chief said, alluding to France, Russia, China, Europe and the United Nations.

He affirmed that the conferees reached a consensus that the peace process would remain the Arabs' strategic option, adding that the ministers during their next meeting, in end of January, would discuss holding an extraordinary Arab summit. (end) ab.rk
