UAE students win Excellence Award at international ICT competition

SHENZHEN, CHINA, 6th January, 2018 (WAM) -- A UAE student team won the Excellence Prize in Huawei's initiative "ICT Skill Competition."

Al Bayt Mitwahid Association has joined hands with Huawei, in order to facilitate the UAE students' participation in the competition, the final stage of which took place this week in Shenzhen in China, and the UAE team won the award.

The competition was launched in the Middle East in August 2017, and aimed to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workforce, by nurturing and developing the ICT skills of the students, preparing them to be the future leaders of the industry.

Saif Ali Al Qubaisi the Chairman of Al Bayt Mitwahid Association stated, "We are delighted with the excellent results achieved by the UAE team in this competition. Al Bayt Mitwahid Association is pleased to be working alongside Huawei, a global leader in information and communication solutions, for such a rewarding initiative. This competition was a great way for students to learn and develop their ICT skills by exposing them to some of the top global ICT executives and the leading international provider of ICT Solutions. We are confident that the experience they have gained in this journey will contribute to the creation of qualified national cadres that will benefit our entire nation in the near future, and we look forward to more exciting initiatives."

All participants underwent highly selective examinations at the national level. Participants worked in real laboratories and tackled some of the industry's most complex challenges related to cloud computing, switching, routing, and other key ICT solutions and technologies related to digital transformation.

Khulood Alqemzi, a UAE University student said, "We are very happy to have represented the UAE at the ICT Skill Competition. Huawei gave us a great opportunity to improve our skills and expand our knowledge. I've very much enjoyed the experience in China, and I'm very proud of the UAE team to have won the Excellence Award."

During the final stage of the competition in China, Ali Obaid Ali Al Yabhouni Al Dhaheri, UAE Ambassador to China, delivered the award to the winning team on stage, in the presence of other senior representatives from participating countries' embassies and consulates. The award ceremony was also attended by Ding Lianpu, Director of the Center for China-Foreign People-to-People Exchanges in China's Ministry of Education, Professor Zhao Jianhua, Deputy Director for the International Center for Higher Education Innovation at UNESCO, Chen Lifang, Corporate Senior Vice President of Huawei Technologies, and Simon Lacey, Vice President of Huawei Global Government Affairs Department, and Charles Yang, President of Huawei Middle East.

In partnership with 14 government ministries, the Huawei Middle East ICT Skill Competition 2017 was hugely successful in its mission to unearth and cultivate the region's finest ICT talent, bringing together more than 10,285 students from 121 educational institutions. The 13 finalist teams had a unique opportunity to learn from Huawei's leading global ICT.
