Russian Police Arrest Author of St. Petersburg's Bombing Attack


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat - Russian authorities arrested on Saturday a man tied with Saint Petersburg's supermarket bombing, which resulted in the injury of 18 people, according to international media. The Federal Security Service (FBS) arrested the suspect. Eight people are still being under medical care due to the incident, reported The Associated Press. The arrested man, whose identity was not released by the police, claimed that he carried out and organized the attack on his own. After the incident, Islamic-State; commonly known as ISIS claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, a member of the security committee in Russia's parliament questioned the claim, stating that it might have been an attempt by ISIS to get publicity, reported British news outlet Daily Star. Russia has been on an alert for the past few months due to warnings sent by Daech. On December 18, Russian authorities arrested seven members of a terrorist cell linked to ISIS. The suspects were allegedly plotting an attack in several public places in the city of Saint Petersburg, which will host various football teams that will will play their World Cup matches in the city, according to Moroccan daily Assabah. ISIS has been threatening to attack Russia, where 2018 World Cup is scheduled to take place next summer. The city of St. Petersburg will host international teams, including Morocco, Argentina, Iran, Brazil, Russia, Egypt, and Costa Rica.
