Most of the motorists who flee the scene after committing traffic accidents usually do not have driving licences, said a source at the General Directorate of Traffic.

'In the General Directorate of Traffic we have a section to record violations against unknown persons, and the fine in such cases, if it is a serious accident, is to transfer the person to Public Prosecution. The losses will be evaluated against the violator to pay it and the punishment may reach prison term, the source told The Peninsula.

To achieve safety on roads, and to enhance cooperation between the General Directorate of Traffic and people, Brig. Abdul Aziz bin Jassim Al Thani, Director of Traffic Patrolling & Investigation Department, recently honoured a number of citizens and residents in recognition of their efforts in cooperation with investigations made by the department to seize a motorist who had committed an accident and escaped.

The said motorist due to his reckless driving had killed a person on the road and escaped from the accident scene. The details of the accident came when the traffic patrols received a report about a traffic accident at ‘Khalifa Avenue' street in front of Education City at 3:40am recently.

When the traffic patrols reached the accident scene, they found that the person who was hit by the car had died. According to ambulance report, the person died instantly.

Because the accident was of a serious nature, the officials found scattered pieces of glasses, some of them from the car that had hit the man.

The Traffic Patrolling & Investigation made the necessary measures to know the offender, and the investigation showed that the accident happened due to reckless and high-speed driving and the offender was driving a ‘pickup' car and the person who had died in the accident was replacing the tyre of his car at the moment.

The director of the department said that the aim of honouring people and the cooperating entities was to encourage positive initiatives from citizens to curb traffic accidents. He also added that it is necessary the spread of the culture of cooperation with traffic officers and to interact with them in case of similar accidents.
