UAE- SIX steps to achieving that shelved resolution

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) We've all been there - the times we'd promise ourselves to change for the better in the coming year but failed to do so. These resolutions often take place at the end of every year, bringing with it a sense of potential accomplishments. But more than often when the new year kicks in, we revert to our old habits like a moth to a flame.

Why is that so? Interestingly, psychologists across the globe have narrowed down the phenomenon to our own sense of failure. According to various research, one of the reasons we continue to make resolutions is because we are unable to satisfy our own promises over the past year. In addition to that, only 8 per cent of people actually work their way to achieving their goals, while the rest of us are satisfied with the mere thought of planning.

As much as it feels great to know that we are not alone, how do we change? Here are few tips to welcome a brand new you:

1. Set specific goals: Instead of spending time declaring your hopes and dreams for 2018 via a Facebook status, think of what exactly you would want to achieve. For instance, if getting fit is your main goal, follow the SMART rule and set plans that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant along with the Time as an indicator.

2. Start small: Keep your goal realistic and as simple as possible. While you have big ideas in mind, work your way towards them in steps. For instance, you could walk 10 minutes more than usual, apply for one more job vacancy, or try to conquer your fear one more time.

3. Invest in a planner: Much like mentally noting down your goals, write them down in a schedule book and describe exactly you would work to make it happen. Revert to it and feel free to adjust accordingly. Penning down those thoughts and setting a course of action is a big step towards keeping your resolution. You can also personalise your diary to make it a vital part of your life.

4. Share your thoughts: Family, friends and even colleagues are pillars of support. Speaking to them about your ambitions for 2018 can help you work harder at making it a reality. Stay away from negative people; they are more than ready to remind you of your failures and demotivate you. Surround yourself with positive people, as they would encourage you to pursue your goals, no matter what obstacles stand in the way.

5. Avoid demotivating yourself: Sometimes, we are our own worst enemy. We tend to give up completely based on mistakes and fear - perhaps you have cheated on your diet, put off a job search because you are somewhat content with your current environ, or had to spend your savings due to a financial emergency - which lead to creating our own obstacles. It may seem hopeless to restart at the time, but do it anyway. There's always room to start over immediately and to discipline and improve yourself.

6. Make resolutions any time of the year: Who said resolutions are limited to the beginning of the year? You can start making some as soon as you're done reading this article! Take action now and you could be on your way to becoming a fine, assertive individual with a bucketful of inspiration.
