Ukraine: hundreds of captives exchanged amid crisis

(MENAFN) Marking one of the most major exchanges ever since the clash initiated in 2014, hundreds of captives were swapped between Ukraine and separatist rebels in the east.

In exchange for 74 people held captive by pro-Russia rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, around 230 prisoners were handed over to rebel-held areas in a swap which occurred for the first time in 15 months.

However, captives who were exchanged were less than originally declared after a great number of prisoners supposed to make their way back to rebel-held territory rejected to go to the other side.

Ukraine's International Committee of the Red Cross spokesman Miladin Bogetic informed the BBC "some of them have already been released and the charges against them have been cleared by the Ukrainian authorities and then they prefer to stay in the government-controlled side."
