US announces massive cut to UN budget

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Dec 26 (KUNA) -- US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced a USD 285-million slash in the US contribution to UN 2018-2019 budget.

For the United States, this move is a step in the right direction, she noted in a press release on Tuesday.

We will no longer let others take advantage of the generosity of the American people, according to the statement.

While the mission is pleased with the results of UN budget negotiations, it will continue to look at ways to increase the UN's efficiency and protect the US interests, Haley made clear.

The inefficiency and overspending of the (UN) organization is well known for everybody, she stated, adding that other reductions would also be made to the UN management and support functions.

The US used to contributed USD 3.3 billion, or 22 percent, to the UN annual budget.

The massive unprecedented cut in the UN budget is an apparent result of the in the UN General Assembly vote on December 21 against the decision of US President Donald Trump on December 6 to consider Jerusalem a capital of Israel and move the US embassy to the Holy City. (end) asf.gb
