Caracas, Rabi'II 08, 1439, December 26, 2017, SPA -- A total of 44 opponents of embattled President
Nicolas Maduro's government have been released in Venezuela, the NGO
Foro Penal Venezolano said Monday, according to dpa.
The group's director, Alredo Romero, confirmed the releases on Twitter.
Most of them were held without being charged. The group claims that some 280 opposition figures are still being held.
The opposition accuses Maduro of sliding into dictatorship after the election and convening of a Constituent Assembly in a vote boycotted by the opposition and accompanied by violent protests and international condemnation.
Venezuela, which has the world's largest proven oil reserves, has been hit hard by a global drop in oil prices coupled with triple-digit inflation.
Hundred of thousands of Venezuelans have fled to neighbouring countries because of food shortages and a lack of basic goods.
