Hundreds of people thronged Katara's Southern Area to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as livestock, dairy and poultry products as the second Mahaseel (Harvest) Festival opened yesterday.

Organised by the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and the Environment, this year's festival has expanded in participation with 30 stalls representing 22 Qatari farms and six national food companies offering a variety of high quality freshly picked fruits and vegetables as well as dairy, meat, poultry, honey, and juices at competitive prices.

Among the vegetables sold at the festival and their prices per kg are cucumber (QR5), broccoli (QR7), green capsicum (QR5), round eggplant (QR5), and string beans (QR10). One tray (30 pieces) of eggs is sold for QR16.50 while a tray containing 15 eggs is sold at QR11.50. A dozen carts selling flowering and ornamental plants are also available at the festival. A variety of authentic homemade Qatari food are also available at over a dozen stalls at the festival.

Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti and Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani, Assistant Undersecretary for Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment officially opened the festival with farmers, participating Qatari companies and a large number of visitors in attendance.

Dr Al Sulaiti said Mahaseel has become one of the most important festivals in Katara which provides excellent platform for local farms and food production businesses to directly sell high quality products to consumers.

Katara has been successful in its initiative to support national products, contributing to the achievement of the Qatar National Vision 2030, and cooperation between the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Katara, which meets a common goal to support local products and the Qatari community, has been fruitful, he added.

'This year's Mahaseel Festival is characterised by the participation of a large number of Qatari farms, which offer a variety of the finest products at reasonable prices, said Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani.

He stressed that all the products being sold at the festival are monitored daily by the Ministry to ensure high quality and conformity to standards.

A number of activities are being held on the sidelines of the festival including lectures on agriculture, beekeeping and healthy nutrition, how to store vegetables and fruits and gardening. Competitions, art workshops and recreational activities for children are also offered at the festival.

The second Mahaseel Festival is open daily from 9am to 10pm until December 30. From next month until the end of March, the festival will open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
