Winners of school Wooden Bridge contest announced

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Tarek bin Zeyad Secondary School for Boys won the 5th High School Wooden Bridge Competition (HSWBC) recently, besting 17 other participating schools in the country.
Some 51 Qatari students took part in the contest, which lasted for two months starting from October.
It was organised by the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE) at Qatar University's College of Engineering (QU-CENG). Jassim bin Hamad Secondary School for Boys bagged the second place followed by Al Shahaneya Secondary School for Boys.
The awarding ceremony was attended by CENG dean Dr Khalifa al-Khalifa and Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering head Dr Mohamed Farouk, as well as faculty and staff.
In a statement, QU noted that this initiative is one of the several high school outreach programmes conducted by CENG to motivate students to join the field of engineering.
The competition involves teams using sticks and glue to construct model bridges.
Senior students, teaching assistants and faculty members guided and advised teams in designing their work.
'This competition outlines our commitment to communicate with community members and students to raise their awareness of CENG programmes and motivate them to join us and contribute to Qatar's development and progress, Dr al-Khalifa said.
Echoing Dr al-Khalifa's view, Dr Farouk said: 'Through HSWBC, the CAE Department is determined to equip secondary school students with the main skills of civil engineering and to enable them to test, design and build small bridges of different uses.
'Based on this competition, CAE attracted several Qatari students who joined the programme
