Australia to end airstrikes in Iraq and Syria
SYDNEY, 22nd December, 2017 (WAM) -- Marise Payne, the Australian Defence Minister, has announced that her country will end air strikes against Daesh in Iraq and Syria, adding that the country's six super hornets will head home from the Middle East, marking the end of Australia's airstrike operations.
In a press statement, the Australian Defence Minister said the announcement followed Iraq's recent declaration of victory over Daesh.
Payne said that other Australian operations in the region would continue, with 80 personnel who are part of the Special Operations Task Group in Iraq, including Australian special forces, continuing their deployment.
Australia has been conducting strikes as part of the Global Coalition against Daesh for three years.
