Israel arrests nine Palestinians in West Bank
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RAMALLAH, Dec 21 (KUNA) -- Israeli occupying forces have arrested nine Palestinians in different cities of the West Bank, the Palestinian Prisoners Club said on Thursday.
Five Palestinians were caught in Al-Khalil (Hebron), three in Ramallah and Al-Bira one in Jericho, the club said in a press release.
Over 500 Palestinians, including 153 children and 11 women, have been arrested by Israeli occupying authorities since the outbreak of protests and rallies in occupied Palestinian territories over a recent US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Earlier on Wednesday at least 16 Palestinians were injured on Wednesday by Israeli forces in the West Bank.
Meanwhile, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) voiced confidence that the international community would largely back the Palestinian people.
PLO Executive Committee's Member Hanan Ashrawi said in a press release that most of the world countries would overwhelmingly take the side of justice and international law.
She made the remark in response to reported US threats against those countries, which intend to vote for Jerusalem at the UN General Assembly later today.
Ashrawi stressed that the UN General Assembly would be a "precious occasion and chance to teach the arrogant US Administration, which breaks the texts and spirit of international commitments, a lesson in invaluable values and rules".
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday approved a resolution on the Palestinian people's right for self-determination and the right to have Palestine as their own independent state.
The resolution was backed by 176 countries, opposed by seven others including the US, Canada and Israel, while four countries refrained from voting.
US President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold "billions" of dollars of US aid from countries, which vote in favor of a United Nations resolution rejecting the US president's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The UNGS is set to vote later Thursday a draft resolution to declare Trump's recent decision over Jerusalem "null and void".
The emergency UN general assembly meeting was called for Thursday to protest against the US veto at Monday's Security Council meeting on a resolution the Jerusalem issue - which was supported by all other 14 members. (end) nq.mt
