DLA sends holiday meals to deployed service members

(MENAFNEditorial) PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 20, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Deployed service members will be able to enjoy a traditional holiday meal this Christmas thanks to the efforts of Subsistence supply chain professionals at the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support.

DLA provided more than 200,000 pounds of turkey, ham, shrimp and more to troops stationed in the Middle East.

Robin Whaley, who works with DLA Troop Support's Subsistence supply chain in Philadelphia, said it takes a lot of planning and coordination between her team and their industry partners to ensure service members can enjoy a traditional meal during the holiday season.

She said the effort is satisfying.

"Our warfighters spend a lot of holidays away from their families and miss out on some of their favorite family traditions," she said. "We take great pride in ensuring a taste of home is delivered to every warfighter."

The combined amounts of food provided through DLA Troop Support for service members deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan and Kuwait include:

  • 112,092 pounds of turkey
  • 59,430 pounds of beef
  • 38,430 pounds of ham
  • 29,304 pounds of shrimp
  • 690 cases of cookies
  • 16,002 assorted cakes and pies
  • 6,564 pounds of marshmallows
  • 3,743 gallons of juice
  • 2,145 gallons of egg nog

DLA Troop Support also ensured that service members at other locations around the world, including those at sea, will be able to enjoy a holiday meal.

As the nation's combat logistics support agency, the Defense Logistics Agency manages the global supply chain — from raw materials to end user to disposition — for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, 10 combatant commands, other federal agencies, and partner and allied nations. DLA also supplies 86 percent of the military's spare parts and nearly 100 percent of fuel and troop support consumables, manages the reutilization of military equipment, provides catalogs and other logistics information products, and offers document automation and production services to a host of military and federal agencies.

DLA Troop Support supplies America's armed forces with $14 billion annually of food, uniforms, protective equipment, medicine and medical supplies, repair parts, and construction and equipment.
