Japan supports US claim on North Korea's cyberattacks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, Dec 20 (KUNA) -- Japan said Wednesday that it supports US' claim that North Korea carried out a ransomware cyberattack that crippled the world's computer systems in May.

"Security of cyberspace is extremely important to ensure peace and prosperity of the international community including Japan," Press Secretary Norio Maruyama said in a statement. On Tuesday, the US blamed North Korea for the cyberattack using "WannaCry" malware. The virus infected more than 300,000 computers in over 150 countries.

"Japan has closely worked together with the international community including the US on North Korean issues, including the areas of cybersecurity. From the perspective of maximizing pressure on North Korea to alter its policy, Japan supports the announcement of the US demonstrating its firm determination towards ensuring the security of cyberspace, and denounces North Korea's involvement behind the "WannaCry" incidents," Murayama said.

The spokesman also said Tokyo will continue to closely cooperate with the international community including Washington and make efforts in order to ensure a free, fair and secure cyberspace. (end) mk.hb
