Trend:

Russia has to work on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict more effectively, Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov told Moscow-Baku information portal.

'There are peaceful, rational solutions to the conflict settlement,' Zyuganov said. "Let's look for peaceful ways together. Everyone is interested in that."

'Russia's policy in the Caucasus, Transcaucasia and Central Asia could be more literate, effective and influential,' Zyuganov added. 'This concerns both relations with Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as Georgia.'

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Zyuganov also commented on the potential of the Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran format.

"Dealing with the Syria issue, Russia, Iran and Turkey could overcome even the biggest disagreements," he said. 'I hope this best practice will continue. I believe the Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran format will also prove to be stable and effective. There are good prospects in this format on many directions."
