Russia Arrests ISIS Members, Tightens Security Ahead of World Cup


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat - Russia is on alert ahead of the 2018 World Cup. The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has arrested seven members of a terrorist cell linked to the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). The suspects were allegedly plotting an attack in several public places in the city of Saint Petersburg, which will host different football teams playing World Cup matches, reported Moroccan daily Assabah. The suspects were in contact through social media, planning serious criminal attacks in the country. They were also plotting a suicide bombing in Kazan Cathedral in the center of the city. During the criminal arrests, Russian police found explosives, guns, and molotov cocktails. Assabah added that the Russian police is increasing its security services ahead of the 2018 World Cup in order to curb any attempted terrorist attacks. The city of St. Petersburg is set to host several international teams, including Morocco, Argentina, Iran, Brazil, Russia, Egypt, and Costa Rica. Back in October, ISIS released a photoshopped poster of Argentina's star player Lionel Messi as a threat to carry out attacks during the competition. The edited image shows image of Messi behind jail bars, crying blood. ISIS's image also features a warning message saying: "You are fighting a state that does not have failure in its dictionary."
