Jordan- House finance panel holds meetings on budget draft

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Dec 18 (Petra) –– The Lower House's Financial Committee on Monday held a series of meetings with the heads of the Securities Commission and Developmental Zones Group and ministers as part of its debate of the 2018 budget law.

Head of the panel, MP Ahmad Safadi, demanded stiffer penalties on what he called "speculators" to regulate the Securities Commission and attract individuals and institutions into the securities market.

The commission's president, Mohammad Hourani, ascribed the decline in the securities sector to the economic conditions in the region and the fallout from the Arab Spring, which, he said, had promoted the closure of many markets.

Separately, Jordan Free and Development Zones Group director, Ahmad Halayqah, told the lawmakers that the zones were set up to attract local, Arab and international investments and prop up the business environment in the various economic activities.

In another meeting, youth minister Hadithah Al Khreishah said his ministry is seeking to create a suitable environment for development of youth through clubs and youth centres, adding that Jordan is still a "young state" in that respect. Culture minister Nabih Shoqum also said his ministry is working on"various administrative and cultural projects to upgrade cultural work through festivals and forums at the local, regional and international levels. Safadi urged the ministry to give due care to the National Library and the Kingdom's heritage as the country's identity.
