US to veto Jerusalem resolution at UN, says ambassador

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York, Dec 18 (Petra) –– US ambassador to the United Nations Nikky Haley said on Monday that her country will veto a resolution rejecting President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

She said in remarks during the UN Security Council debate on the draft resolution ahead of a vote that Washington supports direct negotiations in Middle East peace efforts.

UN envoy to the Middle East Nicolai Mladinov said Jerusalem should remain a final status issue of the peace process, adding that the world body backs the two-state solution. He said that finding a settlement to the Palestinian issue would curb extremists.

The envoy also said that basic services in the Gaza Strip were at their lowest levels as the Israeli-blockaded coastal territory is living a difficult and tragic situation.

He also said Israel had killed 22 Palestinians in the last three months and reiterated that Israel's building of settlements violates international resolutions.
