(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, Dec 18 (KUNA) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and visiting Egyptian Investment and International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr on Monday discussed cooperation on education and investment.
Kono and Nasr exchanged notes about a project that provides JPY 993 million (USD 8.8 million) grand aid for the education and research equipment for the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology, according to the Foreign Ministry.
The project provides grand aid for the education and research equipment for third and fourth year courses at the university's engineering department, which opened in September to allow some 2,000 students to receive Japanese-style engineering education.
Kono welcomed the steady progress of the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership, which was agreed by the two countries during the visit of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi to Japan last year, the ministry said in a press release.
While praising Nasr's initiative to attract investment from Japanese firms through her participation in the Egypt Investment Seminar in Tokyo, Kono voiced expectations for the expansion of the people-to-people exchanges and investment of the two countries through the resumption of EgyptAir's direct flights between Tokyo and Cairo in October.
Kono also highly evaluated the stable basis of Egypt's macroeconomics through economic reforms, such as the introduction of value-added tax, and pledged Japan's support to such efforts.
In response, Nasr gave an explanation of Egypt's economic reforms and initiatives to improve the investment environment and expressed her aspiration for more investment from Japan.
She also expressed gratitude for Japan's support for the two countries' education partnership and the Grand Egyptian Museum Construction Project. (end) mk.mt
