Ashghal opens Lusail Expressway

HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi on Saturday opened the Lusail Expressway after completion of all the main works of the project, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) announced.
One of the most prominent architectural monuments in Doha, the arches of Interchange 5/6, was also launched on the occasion.
The arches at Interchange 5/6 are the 'biggest and tallest monument in Qatar with a height of 100m and width of 147m, and weighing more than 9,300 tonnes of steel, according to a press statement from Ashghal.
The opening of the Lusail Expressway project took place in the presence of Ashghal president Dr Saad bin Ahmad al-Muhannadi and assistant president Abdullah al-Attiyah, other officials and representatives of the consulting and construction companies that participated in the implementation of the project, and the South Korean ambassador to Qatar.

New avenues

A documentary was screened during the Lusail Expressway launch event, showing the journey of the implementation of the project and the engineering challenges that Ashghal overcame, in addition to the openings witnessed this year that culminated in the completion of all main works - including the main carriageways, tunnels and bridges.
With the opening of Lusail Expressway, the journey between Lusail City and Hamad International Airport, Katara and The Pearl-Qatar will take less than 25 minutes, according to the authority.
Following the expressway inauguration, the arches at Interchange 5/6 were opened, and the sky was lit up in the colours of the Qatari flag, decorating the 100m-high structure. The lights highlighted the words of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the arches ‘Promise of Prosperity and Glory' - after which the numbers 5/6 appeared in the sky as a sign of the launch of the most prominent architectural icon in Doha.
The structure 'reflects a unique combination of modernity and heritage, and stands tall in a place where the present of Doha meets its future, Ashghal said, stressing that the arches 'represent an icon of creativity and engineering achievements, proving to the world that Qatar is going ahead towards achieving its vision, overcoming the challenges and demonstrating that this vision is realised to become a reality full of pride.
Dr al-Muhannadi expressed gratitude for the care and guidance of HE the Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani for following up on the major projects in progress, which had a huge impact in terms of speeding up the work and overcoming challenges to achieve Qatar's ambitious vision and strengthen its position.
He said completion of the Lusail Expressway, along with achievements witnessed on a number of other important projects through the year, was 'proof of our capability to accomplish big achievements and head towards achieving Qatar's vision and its development goals, overcoming all challenges.
