(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RIYADH, Dec 14 (KUNA) -- During its 19th session, the Gulf Aid Coordination Office discussed on Thursday the blueprint of a comprehensive aid package for Yemen in 2018.
The meeting, hosted by King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, reviewed the aid projects funded by the GCC states in Yemen in the recent years in the presence of Yemeni Minister of Local Administration Abdul Raqeeb Fateh.
Fateh, also chairman of the Higher Relief Committee in Yemen, briefed the meeting on the latest developments of the humanitarian disaster in the country.
In statements to KUNA on the fringes of the meeting, he said the Gulf Aid Coordination Office plays an essential role in organizing the relief efforts across Yemen.
He thanked the member countries of the coordination office for their efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.
Fateh noted signs of famine are apparent in the areas controlled by the rebel Houthi militias, not those under the authority of the legitimate government.
The government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi is committed to delivering the assistance to needy people countrywide equitably and impartially, he stressed.
The Yemeni minister appreciated the efforts of the Kuwaiti fund-raising agencies, saying the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) was the first agency that responded to the needs of the residents in most of governorates under the control of Houthi militias.
IICO and Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) were able to deliver aid to, and implement key relief projects in, Amran and Sanaa governorates, he pointed out.
On his part, KRCS Deputy Chairman Anwar Al-Hassawi said today's meeting aimed to ensure that the efficacy and integration of the relief efforts of coordination office members.
The Gulf Aid Coordination Office works as an umbrella organization for 12 aid agencies from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states that work together with the foreign ministries of these countries for helping the Yemeni people, he told KUNA.
Al-Hassawi noted that representatives of these organizations pay field visits frequently to several parts of Yemen to assess the needs of the people there in such areas as famine relief and medical and educational aid.
He added that representatives of the Kuwaiti Quick Response society will visit Yemen on December 23 to oversee the implementation of the aid projects.
Al-Najat Charity was represented at today's meeting by its Director General Dr. Jaber Al-Wandeh while Tareq Al-Khashram and Faisal Al-Khamsan represented the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry. (end) mdm.gb
